What is the CE Mark & CE Marking?
In simple terms, CE Marking is a symbol of conformity to the applicable Essential Health & Safety Requirements defined within the European Directives
CE comes from the abbreviation of French phrase "Conformité Européene" which when translated literally means "European Conformity".
CE Mark - What can be CE Marked?
There are a number of New Approach Directives which require products to carry CE Marking before being placed on the market (see below). Examples of these are the Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive, Pressure Equipment Directive, Small Crafts Directive and the Medical Devices Directive. The full list can be found at www.newapproach.org/Directives/DirectiveList.asp.
Laidler Associates can help you to conform with the Machinery Directive, Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive, Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and ATEX Directives.
Laidler Associates can also hold the Technical Construction File.
What is meant by on the market?
The machinery directive defines ‘placing on the market’ as making available for the first time in the Community machinery or partly completed machinery with a view to distribution or use, whether for reward or free of charge. So even if you are building a machine for your own use, it must still be CE Marked.
I want to sell machinery in the EU, what do I need to do?
Before you can import a machine into the EEC you must ensure that your machine complies with the Essential Health & Safety Requirements and is CE Marked. With changes to the Machinery Directive at the beginning of 2010 you now also need someone to hold your Technical Construction File within the EEC even if you self certify.
If I import a machine into the EU from within the same company, does that machine still require CE Marking?
Yes, any machine coming into the EU must be CE Marked and show the CE Mark.
Moving machinery within the same company is still classed as Supply of Machinery and therefore must comply with all applicable directives.
I have an old machine within the EU that isn't CE Marked. Does it need CE Marking?
If the machine was within the borders of the European Union before 1996 when the directives came into effect you do not need to CE Mark the machine
If it came into the EU after 1996 then it will require CE Marking before it can be put into use
